Defying Gravity

While in New York this March, I had the privilege of seeing Wicked live on Broadway. It was amazing!!! One of the songs particularly stood out to me, and still does. I draw on this song for inspiration all the time.

I won't go into the intricate details of the play, but suffice it to say that it centers around the life of the Wicked Witch of the West, who turns out is really just grossly misunderstood. This song is about when she realizes that the Wizard isn't the great guy she thought he was, and decides to strike out on her own and do the right thing, no matter what anybody says.

Nobody will ever be able to convince me that the person who wrote this song was NOT a runner! The beginning lyrics beautifully sum up my feelings about running, and about all of us who are using running to change our lives, and accomplish things we never thought possible. We are truly "Defying Gravity" every time we run just a little bit further, or faster, or longer than before.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!

  1. I have goose bumps! I adore that song!! I have yet to see the musical :( but my hope is that when *ahem I get to go to New York for the first time I will see Wicked live it is one that I have been dying to see!! Also I have to tell you something WONDERFUL! I went to check out the newest gym on post and it has and INDOOR running track. Do you know what that means for someone who is stuck in BFE Desert!!! I might (with my doctors blessing) be able to start running! Or at the very least vigoriously walking...I sure do wish you were here. If for nothing else to help me jump start my journey or drop kick my doc if he tells me no! Ha! Love your guts chick..Keep on Rocking

  2. I love this! Jennifer, what a great correlation and discovery. I look for these revelations in all the challenges of life and find I can often relate them back to the challenge of running.

I am going to find this tune so I can download it to my I and Pod. I will think of you and your words as I jam to it during my run.

Thanks for sharing! Keep up the hard work! It will be worthwhile (that's what I tell myself daily).
